DGNet Congress Recap

17 Oct 2025

Jakob Hoffmann presented his research and a new directory board was elected

We were at the DGNet Congress in Bayreuth!

Our colleague Jakob Hoffmann presented his research on the role of periphery in innovation. Challenging the common assumption that peripheral regions are innovation deserts, Jakob argues that they foster different types of innovation than the core.

Using the dual-core-periphery model developed by Johannes Glückler and BASF patent data, he analyzed co-inventorship networks and found that:

  • Core patents tend to be more original and radical, but often of lower quality.
  • Peripheral patents, in contrast, show higher quality and originality.

The DGNet also elected a new DGNet Board of Directors: congratulations to Melanie Nagel and to our long-term colleague and friend Robert Panitz!

Thank you to Christian Stegbauer and the organizers of this year’s congress for bringing Germany’s network research community together!
